SOUTHFIELD — Mother Nature gave it her best shot.

Buckets of rain, a howling wind and dark skies fit for Halloween night descended on the Southfield Civic Center June 28, but the conditions weren’t strong enough to beat the will of some dedicated competitors.

So despite threatening skis, the 2008 Gus Macker Tournament was, in the words of tournament organizer Gary Gray, a “very successful day.”

“The whole day was great,” Gray said. “People wanted to come out and have fun, and that’s exactly what happened.”

More than 100 teams, ranging in age groups from 10 and under to 40 and over, competed in the tournament, which began at 8:30 a.m. and ran past 6 p.m.

“We had to stop for about 40 minutes or so due to weather,” Gray said with a laugh. “Other than that, things were almost perfect.”

“Everything went very smoothly,” he added. “We had officials on every court. There were no incidents at all. It was just a very good day.”
