Fraser High handed out $27,000 to five charitable groups at halftime of the school’s March 2 boys varsity basketball game.
The money was raised in the fall during the school’s “Ramblers for a Cause” fundraiser centered around a Sept. 18 varsity football game at Romeo High.
“It was pretty cool,” Fraser Athletic Director Brad Robinson said. “It just made it worth it. Our community just worked their tails off. For all the people involved, it was pretty worthwhile.”
Fraser donated $10,000 to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society; $7,500 went to the Regents of the University of Michigan to benefit the Pediatric Research and Child Life programs at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center; $5,000 was donated to Special Days Camps; $2,500 was given to the American Cancer Society; and $2,000 went to the Susan G. Komen Society’s Detroit Race for the Cure.
Student-athletes presented the checks to representatives from each organization.
“It really was (special),” Robinson said. “Once I could step back and think about all the hard work everyone put in, it was very rewarding. To see the expressions on faces of the recipients was pretty neat.”
While the check presentation put the final touches on the fall fundraiser, the night also served as a kick-off event for a similar fundraiser Fraser will host in September.
The school’s fall athletic teams and band will join with Roseville High as Fraser hosts
“Teaming Up for a Cure” Sept. 24.
The Fraser and Roseville sports teams will play each other in the week leading up to and culminating again with a varsity football game.
“We’re going to be hosting; we’re very excited,” Robinson said. “We just had a meeting with next year’s fall athletes, and we filled the cafeteria. There were lots of heads nodding. Everyone’s going to be on-board with it.
“Romeo did such a great job. I just hope we can repeat that. I’m hoping our two communities can produce that feeling we had that night and week. I think we can.”
The fundraiser got off to a strong start when Delia Martin, owner of the El Charro Mexican Restaurant in Fraser, donated $1,000 to Teaming Up for a Cure during the halftime check presentation.
“Already having $1,000 toward it next year is fantastic,” Robinson said.
