CLINTON TOWNSHIP — A man who fatally shot a 34-year-old Shelby Township resident on Hall Road after an argument at a stop light was released from police custody pending further investigation. At press time, no charges had been filed.
The shooter, 38 and of Detroit, left C.J. Barrymore’s entertainment center just after 10 p.m. Feb. 6 with his two children, ages 6 and 9, when he was reportedly cut off by another vehicle, said Clinton Township Capt. Richard Maierle. The victim, Anton Djeljevic, was in the other car with several other people and was heading to a party, police said.
“They ended up stopping at Groesbeck and Hall Road,” Maierle said. “Words were exchanged, and during the whole incident the Detroit resident pulled out a .40-caliber (gun) and shot the victim twice.”
Djeljevic had reportedly gotten out of the car and approached the man’s vehicle when he was shot through the window. He was taken to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead on arrival.
The shooter, who has no prior criminal record, continued driving east on Hall Road and called 911. The call was routed to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, which instructed the man to pull over on I-94 and surrender, Maierle said.
Clinton Township Police recovered the gun and held the suspect over the weekend, but he was released Feb. 8.
“The Macomb County Prosecutor instructed us to release him pending issuance of a warrant,” Maierle said. “They want some more follow up, and that’s what we’re working on right now.”
Maierle said some witnesses have come forward, but investigators are hoping to talk to more. Anyone with information about the shooting should call Clinton Township Police at (586) 493-7840.
